Calmecac Gallery

For nearly ten years, Galeria Calmecac has been exhibiting artwork by national, international as well as local artists.

Named for the famed cultural school of the Aztecs, Galeria Calmecac is located on the second floor of Casa Aztlan. Recent shows have included Mil Mascaras, an exhibit of paintings papier-mache masks centered on the theme of Mexican Wrestling or Lucha Libre.

This exhibit was sponsored by the City of Chicago’s After School Matters program. Local youth were employed to create artwork for our gallery. Students were responsible for creating their own wrestling persona, and of course a mask to go along with it.

This summer will bring the Viva Aztlan festival on July 16th, 17th and 18th.

The Galeria has also been part of the Pilsen Open Studios project. Each fall Pilsen area galleries, cafes, and individual artists open their spaces to the public.

Galeria Calmecac is dedicated to showcasing new up-and coming artists as well as established individuals. Artists are encouraged to submit portfolios and proposals for exhibitions. All submissions are reviewed by our selection committee.
