includes arranging your citizenship or renewing your residence card.
The following prerequisites are required to fill out the citizenship application.
You
must have been a permanent resident for 5 years or you must have been
married to an American citizen for 3 years. You must have your
permanent residence card, a money order for $675.00 dollars, records of
all your comings and goings from the country for the last 5 years. You
also must have records of employment and rent (including names and
addresses).
If you are married you will need to
provide the location and date of your marriage. You will also need the
social security number and proof of citizenship or permanent residence
of your spouse. If your spouse is undocumented or living in another
country you will need to provide his or her birth date and record of
marriage.
If you have been arrested you will need a copy of the police report. You can pick a copy up at 35th
and Michigan. If you have been to court you should present a copy of
the judge's resolution. You can get this at the Daley Center. If you
have children you should be prepared to present the location and date
of their birth as well as the place in which they reside.
People
who are 50 years old or older who have resided here for more than 20
years and people who are 55 years old or older who have resided here
for 15 years can take the citizenship test in their own language.
Everyone else must take the test in English. People who are 65 years
old with 25 years of residence can take a simple civics test in Spanish.
The requirements for implementing a change of residence card are:
A permanent residence card, a money order for $370.00 dollars, and a social security number.
